What Influences the Price of an Artist’s Work

When we look at a work of art, it is easy to think that its price depends only on the artist’s talent or on our personal impression. But the market works in a more complex way. What Influences the Price of an Artist’s Work

When we look at a work of art, it is easy to think that its price depends only on the artist’s talent or on our personal impression. But the market works in a more complex way. The price of an artwork is shaped by several factors at once, from the artist’s professional environment to their market history.

According to the report Overview of the Investment ART Market in Russia 2023–2024 by MyReport.Art, one of the strongest factors influencing the average price of a contemporary artist’s work is not age, and not even the number of exhibitions, but where the artist lives and works.

This is an important signal. A city and professional environment often shape the context in which an artist develops, the institutions and galleries they engage with, and the visibility they receive. In other words, the price of a work is formed not only inside the studio, but also around it.

The next important factor is art education. It is still seen as a marker of professional training, seriousness, and connection to the artistic field. After that come other indicators: liquidity, place of birth, year of birth, and the number of sold lots.

What is especially interesting is that the number of exhibitions on its own affects price less than many people might expect. For collectors, this is a useful reminder: not every exhibition automatically means a rise in value. It is more important to look at the quality of the artist’s professional trajectory, the consistency of interest in their work, and the way their career develops over time.

Put simply, the price of an artwork is not only a matter of taste. It is a combination of artistic strength, professional context, and the trust that the market gradually builds around an artist.

For a beginning collector, this leads to a practical conclusion: it is worth looking not only at the artwork itself, but also at the artist’s path. Where do they work? What is their educational background? Do they have confirmed sales? Is there a clear and steady interest in their work from galleries, collectors, and institutions?

This is where a more thoughtful view of the art market begins.
